Steel Worm Drive Shafts for the Food Industry

At Swihart Industries, Inc., we produce custom machined worms and other products, parts and components for a range of industries and equipment. This project was completed for a customer in the food processing equipment industry and the shaft is turned and milled in one of our cells in 3 operations and then nickel plated. The shaft is made of Hot Rolled AISI 4140 alloy steel hardened and tempered to an approximate hardness of 30-34 HRC. After machining, the part is electroless nickel plated before shipping to the customer. The part measures a little over 13” long and 2.500" in diameter with tolerances as close as ±0.0003". This drive shaft is used as part of a worm drive assembly in a food industry mixer. The tight tolerances are essential for not only the proper fit and performance of the equipment but also to meet the strict requirements of the food processing industry.
